How to get your Part 107 certificate
The steps to becoming an FAA-certificated remote pilot in the US, from eligibility to your first commercial flight.
Check eligibility
You must be at least 16, able to read, speak, write and understand English, and in a physical and mental condition to fly a drone safely.
Get an FAA Tracking Number (FTN)
Create an IACRA profile to obtain your FTN. You need it to book the knowledge test.
Study for the knowledge test
The Unmanned Aircraft General – Small (UAG) test covers regulations, airspace, weather, loading and performance, and operations. Many learners use an online test-prep course; others prefer a classroom course with an instructor.
Book and pass the test
Schedule the test at an FAA-authorised knowledge testing centre and pay the testing fee to the testing provider. Bring government-issued photo ID.
Apply for the certificate
After passing, complete FAA Form 8710-13 in IACRA. Once the TSA security check is complete you receive a temporary certificate, followed by the permanent card.
Important
Course completion is not FAA certification. The Remote Pilot Certificate is issued by the FAA after passing the knowledge test at an FAA-authorised testing centre. Check the FAA website for current fees and procedures.
